A potential idea

Posted by: Greg @ 1:03 PM.

I was doing some cleaning yesterday and found my copy of the I Ching. I've always been fascinated by Eastern philosophies and ideas, and I was thinking that it might be interesting to have a character occasionally consult the hexagrams to try to figure out what to do with respect to situations that may arise. Basically, at the points when the character decides to use it, I would do the casting myself and then use whatever comes up to move the story along. However, that feels way too gimmicky. And I'm pretty sure I've read a story where the characters did the same thing. I guess we'll see how the characters are turning out as I write and see if it is actually something that any of them would do.

Oh, and I did another redo of some of the coding and they design of the page. Still not quite what I want, but it'll have to do for now.

Blog status

Well, I decided to give the entire blog an overhaul, all of the preset layouts were bloated with code that I didn't feel was very necessary. It is still a work in progress though, since as it is now, it's still very bland.

Main things to note are the links in the sidebar to the NaNoWriMo main page, the picture that will show the progress I'm making in my novel which also links to my overall progress profile, and my Pandora radio stations. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Pandora is an online individually customizable radio station. You provide it with an artist or a song that you like, and it plays songs and artists that are similar musically. You can then mark whether you like to dislike the songs it plays to make each station more customized. I've been addicted to it for the past few weeks and pretty much listen to it non-stop. I've no doubt that it will be providing the background music for any writing that I do at home.

So, I was doing some reading in the livejournal community for NaNoWriMo, and someone posted a link to a collection of 6 Word Stories that was published in Wired Magazine. I found it to be a very interesting little project, and some of the ones that they included were really good. Like,
Gown removed carelessly. Head, less so.
- Joss Whedon
It's behind you! Hurry before it
- Rockne S. O'Bannon
Nevertheless, he tried a third time.
- James P. Blaylock
I think what I'd like to do is to write a 6 word story every day during November to supplement my novel writing. The one that came to mind while I was reading the article was, "He was born, and he died."

Well, this is where I'll keep at least one copy of the work I do for National Novel Writing Month. For those of you unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo, it's an annual month long quote-unquote competition in which people challenge themselves to write a 50,000 word story (or at least 50,000 words of a story), which is essentially a short novel. I first heard about it when I was blogging a year ago, but not until after it had started, so I didn't participate then. A co-worker of mine mentioned it to me the other day and I decided I ought to get involved this year.

My only previous experience with fiction writing is short stories, nothing coming close to the length I'm aiming for with this project. I haven't actually written anything in at least a year either. And, as of yet, I don't have any real clue what kind of story I'll be writing. I intend to let my pencil hit the page and go from there. The fun thing is that I've gotten a few of my friends to join up as well. Maybe I'll get them to post their work here. Besides the actual novel that I write, I plan on writing about the writing process as well.
